The Founder Behind The Velvet Table
Hi, I’m Kaj — the heart behind The Velvet Table.
My story with food didn’t begin as a passion — it began in the kitchen, growing up, helping my mom every single day.
From early mornings on weekends to everyday meals, cooking was always part of our routine. We weren’t just making simple dishes — my parents loved variety. From Indian to Mexican, Mediterranean to Asian, every meal was different, always homemade, always intentional. At the time, it felt exhausting. But looking back, it shaped everything.
Over time, I began to understand that food wasn’t just about cooking — it was about care, about effort, and about creating something meaningful for the people you love. As I grew older and started cooking on my own, that perspective shifted into something deeper. What once felt like a responsibility became something I truly enjoyed — experimenting, creating, and sharing.
And then, something clicked.
My mother-in-law once told me over the phone, “I can see food is your love language.” That moment stayed with me. She encouraged me to turn it into something more — giving me opportunities, guiding me, and pushing me to believe in something I hadn’t fully seen yet.
Between both of the incredible women in my life, I learned something powerful:
Food is how love is expressed. Both my mom and my mother-in-law always cooked in abundance— making sure everyone was fed, sending food home, tasting every dish to make sure it was just right. It was never just about the meal — it was about care, connection, and making people feel taken care of.
That is the foundation of The Velvet Table.
Today, everything I create is rooted in that same intention — to make people feel welcomed, cared for, and part of something meaningful. Because to me, catering isn’t just about food.
It’s about creating an experience people remember.
